  • Boat Project : Grinding Fiberglass! LOTS of it.

I've heard nothing but horror stories about grinding fiberglass, but that's the stage we're at so it was time to jump in!! With the boat down at Jeff Hull's yard in Ventura in a killer grind bay, we were set up to go to town. I had some guidance from my friend Trent who built a 32x10 radon (our boat is his families old boat) as well as Mason down at Jeff's yard.

The goal was to clean up everything behind the live well bulk head and get it prepped to lay down new cloth, stringers, etc... there was so much tabbing around the stringers to grind down to get it semi even. The most critical thing about this grinding was proper gear! When you're grinding this shit goes EVERYWHERE! So, the full tyvek with the hood was critical. Also critical was to tape the arms to your gloves so fibers didn't get up your sleeve. Also, taping the legs!! A full face mask respirator is a must too.... unless you want to be covered in dust and itchy as shit! If you suit up appropriately, it isn't too bad! I honestly found it oddly enjoyable. haha. Granted, I wouldn't want to it every day all day!

I put in some seriously long days. like 8-9 hours. Once I got in a rhythm the time was flying by. Lots of water breaks as you are drenched in sweat very quickly. The diamond blade was a game changer... That helped me quickly move through material and then I could go back and fine tune stuff with the 24 grit on a backing pad. This is the first 2 days of grinding, but we got a lot done!

Also noteworthy... Our project is leaps and bounds beyond this... I have been lagging with the updates and don't want to inundate anyone with too much boat shit! haha. This was back in may, so we've been cranking since then! Huge thank you to Jeff and his crew for having us and for all of the hard work and guidance!
