  • Boat Re-power Vlog #2 : Pulling the Engines and Stripping the Boat

After a day and a half of working on the boat in the parking lot, Eddie came and pulled the boat out to the Anderson boat yard in Goleta. I kept working on getting every nut and bolt off the boat. The biggest feat was pulling the motors and getting the outdrives off. Pulling the engines really isn't too hard. I pulled one with our mechanic Patrick one day and replaced a transom assembly so that was great to have that knowledge to help take the boat apart completely. I tried to film some of it, but most of it is in such tight corners and so tedious it was hard to show anything in too much detail. My filming tactics for this selfie shit are also slowly improving thanks to a couple new GoPro mounts. haha!

The main engine systems that needed disconnecting are battery leads, fuel lines, raw water hoses, shifter cables, and then where they connect to the transom assembly and the engine mounts. I'm probably forgetting something, but it is pretty easy to have them ready to pull. I have a Makita impact driver and a good set of sockets for it that makes all of this way easier. A good set of wrenches is key, and then I also used a drill a ton for all of the other random stuff in the engine box. The transom plates area a little tricky as you have to get the exhaust elbows off, the water intake fitting, but then it's mostly just 6 bolts holding the inside plate to the outside. Using a screw driver or chisel was how I pried them apart. It's a little tricky to not beat up the gel coat a little, but it's not impossible.

Once all of that stuff was off of the boat it was just taking things a part and cleaning. A lot of bolts were seized up so I used a cut off disk on a grinder to take care of those. The compressor mounts were all rusted out so I had to cut all of those off. All in all I think it took me about 3-4 full days to have everything stripped off of the boat and a good canvas to start working on the next phase. Happy to answer any questions anyone has!
